The Making of Exciseman Gill

Smuggler Bill, he looks behind, And he sees a Dun horse come swift as the wind, And his nostrils smoke and his eyes they blaze Like a couple of lamps on a yellow post-chaise ! Every shoe he has got Appears red-hot! And sparks round his ears snap, crackle, and play, And his tail cocks up in a very odd way ; Every hair in his mane seems a porcupine’s quill, And there on his back sits Exciseman Gill, Crying ‘ Yield thee ! now yield thee, thou Smuggler Bill !’

Having purchased the Pirate uniforms mentioned in the previous post, I edited one of them to remove his parrot and to change some of the colouring of his clothing. I also adorned him with the tricorn hat, which I made in an earlier post.

I also imported the face of a friend (thank you Fal Allen, master brewer) to represent Exciseman Gill. Of course by the time you have proportioned and adjusted everything in iClone, there is not much resemblance to the original person.

For the horse I used the thoroughbred from the Horse & Tack pack and changed the Brightness, Contrast, Saturation & Hue settings to make a Dun from a Chestnut.

I then selected “Small Smoke” from the Fire & Smoke folder under the Particle option in the Set section of iClone.

I did quite a lot of experimenting to get the some to blow in the direction I wanted. The Gravity settings were particularly helpful here, once I realised that gravitational forces work in 3 dimensions in iClone5.

Having worked out how to make the smoke do what I wanted, I linked the smoke generator to the horse and positioned in the left nostril. I then generated a second smoke generator in the right nostril. All the settings except the X dimension of Gravity were duplicated in the second generator. Now some billows from the horses nostrils in a way that the smoke from the left nostril billows out to the left and the some from the right nostril billows out to the right.

I did make one attempt to make the eyes glow yellow like carriage lamps. It looks like that bit didn’t quite work, so I will have to try harder!
