“The End of…” – Note 2

In my earlier posts related to the “End of Bill & Gill” I mentioned that I would post some notes on lessons I learned during the process.

This is the second of those notes.

I have previously described some basic camera operations. Now I wanted to improve my final sequence where the camera starts close up to the bodies of Bill, Gill and the dapple grey mare and then ascends out of the pit while still looking down into it. I had some issues when I simply tried to set a start point and end point for the camera, in that my path was angled such that the camera clipped (and so passed through) the pit walls.

I found it very useful to be able to view with two cameras at the same time.

The big view shows the view from the preview camera (1), which remained stationary throughout, because I didn’t animate it. The insert view was opened (2) and was filmed with my other camera (3), from which the movie shot was being filmed.

By moving the scrubber (4), I could see the shot from the camera which was going to be used to film the movie (in the insert view (3)). In theory I should also have been able to see the actual camera as an image moving in the Preview Camera. However it was very small, so to see it better, I clicked the move button (5) which displayed the camera’s move widget (6). This not only made the position of the camera doing the filming more visible, but also allowed me to more easily manipulate its position.
