Moving iClone 5 Content to iClone 6

There are two main types of content that we need to concern ourselves about. They are content we have purchased from or via Reallusion and content we have built ourselves or obtained from other sources. Reallusion content appears under the Template tab, while other content appears under the Custom tab.

If you click on the images in this post you should get taken to larger versions. Then use the Back button to return here.

In the image immediately below, you will see in the panel on the left that iClone 6 has listed the contents that I have purchased under Pack Template / Not Installed. If I want to install these on iClone 6 I can right click on the content pack I want to download and select “Add to Virtual Folder”. The first pack I downloaded and installed was Nature Builder. This got installed into Set Template / Props. I understand you can reinstall previously downloaded content files without downloading them again, but by downloading again you ensure you get the latest version.

iClone 5 - 6 Content Transfer part 0ne

So how do we transfer our custom content?

One way is to do it one item at a time. This could be quite laborious but might be preferable if we have a lot of content and want to review what we want to transfer, with an expectation that we might not want to keep a lot of what we created in iClone 5.  To do this we open both iClone 5 and iClone 6 and drag our custom content icon from iClone 5 to the 3D viewing window in iClone 6 (see image above).

iClone 5 - 6 Content Transfer part Two

Of course after all the effort of building it, St. Marys Reculver was the first item I transferred. Having got it onto the 3D view in iClone 6, I then added it to my iClone 6  Custom Content folder as indicated by the red arrows in the image above.

Another much quicker way is to copy the iClone 5 content folder into the iClone 6 content folder (see image below). It might be possible to get iClone 6 to look in the iClone 5 Content folder without having to copy it, but I haven’t yet found the way to do that.

iClone 5 - 6 Content Transfer part Three

Note the file path in the address window at the top of the image above. Doing this enables iClone 6 to open all our Custom Content including Projects that we saved in iClone 5.

iClone 5 - 6 Content Transfer part Four

As you can see in the image above, I have opened one of my iClone 5 projects in iClone 6. The first thing I tried was to see if my animations still work. As a result I can confirm that my horses still follow their paths and gallop just as they did in iClone 5.

So far I have not encountered any problems.
